22|Nov|2009 12:53 pm 150mm is often regarded as a standard focal length and also a bit of a funny one. It’s not quite wide enough nor long enough for some, but there are plenty of people shooting some really excellent photographs with this almost cheap enough to throwaway lens.
On FX, it can make a nice walkabout lens and is great for capturing waist-up portraits. On DX, the angle of view is in the territory of a short telephoto i.e. head & shoulder portraits. Of course, this lens isn’t limited to just shooting portraits, but it should give you an idea of its angle of view.
It’s one of the cheapest lenses you can buy new, it focuses relatively quickly (note it won’t auto-focus on D40/50/60 due to lack of internal focusing motor), is a little soft wide open, but not unusably so.
A great little budget lens to throw in the camera bag on a shoot without taking up too much room. Also, a very cheap way to get wide apertures.
