The ball head can be released to allow free movement in all directions or just to allow panning using two separate controls. You can tell this is a high quality product because both individual controls work without the need for excessive force. The rubberised ring around the panning knob almost acts like a clutch preventing over-tightening! The RC2 quick release plate works well, holding the camera/lens steady against the tripod head. All-in-all, a good workhorse ball head that's strong enough for most digital SLR set-ups and will last a good long while. This ball head makes an excellent combination with the Manfrotto 190XPROB or similar tripod.
