The Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS USM lens improves on an already excellent performer of a lens with the addition of a 3-stop image stabilisation system that allows the photographer to take blur-free hand held shots in low light conditions.
A staple lens for professional people photographers, this wide aperture, fast auto focusing, optically stabilised, weatherproof, built-like-a-tank lens delivers pin sharp subjects with beautifully blurred backgrounds.

Originally, I was the owner of this lens’ younger sibling; the EF 70-200 f/4 IS, but decided to trade up when I wanted more background blur and more light into the lens than it could give.
So, whereas I rarely used the f/4 version of the lens, the f/2.8 has been already seen a lot of action in a short space of time.
Yes, it does cost a lot and, yes, it does get heavy to hold after a long shoot, but the results are worth it. The IS works well to steady a large amount of camera shake (which can be something of its own doing being so heavy) and the optics deliver a performance that sits amongst the best of Canon’s L range.
Get a loan, get a monopod and get this lens!

The weight
The colour
The cost
I bought it along with a Canon 5d and I’m really pleased with the results it’s my main lens for gig photography and portraits. Along with my 24-70 2.8 I’m pretty much covered for most eventualities. It’s size and weight can be a drag if you want to travel lightly. I also wish it was black – as it’s shout paparazzi as soon as anyone see it.
Cost wise it’s very expensive at the moment due to the exchange rate.
